Deconstructing Tarantino

How to recognize his films

Nowadays the film industry is growing more and more. It’s become a phenomenon to stand out and get a reputation for. However difficult this is, nobody can deny that Quentin Tarantino has achieved it.

Quentin Jerome Tarantino (born March 27th, 1963) started working in a film library. In 1992 he managed to direct his first movie “Reservoir dogs”, a massive hit. He continued his career with the project “Pulp Fiction” that got him to the top and it’s nowadays considered his masterpiece. Then followed other films like “Jackie Brown”, “Kill Bill”, “Django Unchained”, or “The Hateful Eight”, among others.

Tarantino’s movies collect many unmistakable characteristics, and the most remarkable one is probably the use of violence and sadism, maybe because he thinks “violence is the best way to connect with the public”.

Other recognizable aspects of his work are the use of non-linear structures, extended scenes of dialogue, or the use of a handheld camera. You can’t either obviate the different tributes he has done to other films, or his talent in picking the music for his productions, achieving perfect synchronicity in the scenes.

Maybe his movies are not attractive to everyone, but the truth is that they have a personal seal, probably because Tarantino also makes a cameo on most of them, or because he frequently includes identifiable objects like a Zippo lighter or Red Apple cigarettes. Either way, he is one of the most successful directors of our time, one you should be now able to recognize.
